Married Student Housing: The Options

Some universities offer student family apartments near campus. Typically, you have to be a full-time student and married or in a domestic partnership or be a single student with at least 50 percent legal custody of dependent children. Often, these student family apartments are within one mile of campus, and free shuttle service is provided for transportation to and from campus. Some colleges even offer on-campus married student housing. Married student couples can find three to five bedroom townhouses with 1,300 square feet of living space. Some married student housing accommodations are even pet-friendly. So, go ahead and bring your furry four-legged companion along.

College Apartment Complexes for Married Student Housing

Outside of on-campus family apartments and university off campus housing, there are plenty of college apartment complexes that are ideal for married student housing. Rent a one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-bedroom or four-bedroom apartment, depending on whether or not you want some college roomies. And with separate bathrooms for each occupant, married college couples can enjoy their privacy while enjoying the college lifestyle.

Invite college friends over for a barbeque in the courtyard, swim in the pool, a cup of java, workout in the fitness center, some gaming fun in game rooms or study time in the residential student lounge. And with a college apartment complex that offers married student housing, college married couples can stroll hand-in-hand right to class.

Grants for Married College Students

Married college students represent a growing percentage of the college student body. Some are young who have married early while others have married during their college years. At the same time, the largest group of married college students consists of adults who are enrolling in college to improve their job prospects. Some may have postponed their post-secondary education in favor of a family. Whatever category married college students fit into, the need for financial assistance is often paramount.

Fortunately, there are a variety of scholarships and grants available that have been designed to meet the needs of married college couples. Grants are available from private organizations, advocacy groups, universities and federal and state governments. All students, whether single or married, can apply to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA application determines eligibility and award amounts for married couples.

The main difference between a married college student’s FAFSA and the single college student’s FAFSA is the reported income and assets. Any award eligibility is determined by the total combined assets and income of the student and their spouse. And while it may impact some eligibility for some scholarships and grants, it doesn’t always preclude financial aid. Married college students should go ahead and apply anyway. There just may be some open financial aid opportunities, which can be used for things like married student housing.
