Gearing Up: What to Pack for College

Heading off to college means that you’ve got some serious packing to do. Countless students arrive to their college student accommodations with massive boxes and suitcases only to realize that they’ve brought too much or forgot an important essential. Bring the right items along and skip the hassle of having to buy items.

Clothing

Comfortable clothes and shoes will easily take you from class and back, so pack up some sweats and track shoes. And don’t forget about those trendy jeans. It’s a must-have essential for the college crowd. Even if you’re going to college in a warmer climate, pack a coat for those unexpected chilly days. While most of your college garb will be casual, there are a number of occasions that will require you to break out that tie or pencil skirt. Be sure to pack some business attire for interviews, job fairs, class presentations and special campus events. For those hectic mornings, pack a bottle of wrinkle remover spray and skip the iron and ironing board.

The College Bedroom

A nifty bed ensemble will give you everything you need to set up a cozy place to relax, study and sleep. With sheets, pillowcases and comforter, you’re good to go. Even pack a matching laundry basket for those dirty clothes. Packing some plastic crates will also allow you to keep the room neat with a place to put books, cleaning items and additional clothing. Pack up some poster putty and make your bedroom your own with your favorite art work, posters and pictures. With a study lamp, you can get all the light you need for late-night study sessions.

Bathroom and Laundry Essentials

For the ladies, the list could go on and on. But, pack essentials like shaving cream and razors, shampoo, soap, towels and a shower bag for carrying items. Band-Aids, cold medicine, aspirin and a first-aid kit will keep you prepared for those unexpected cuts and colds. Gear up with some laundry detergent and dryer sheets to keep your stuff clean, fresh and soft.

Gadget Stuff

No one gets by today in college without a laptop or desk computer, so be sure to pack one for all of those college assignments and research. Another helpful gadget is a calculator. This will keep you on budget. Take your favorite tunes from home to campus with an iPod. Depending on your college, you may be able to bring a TV if there’s cable. Taking your smartphone with you goes without say. After all, the folks back home will be waiting to hear from you.

Of course, there are more optional items that you pack for college, but these essentials will get you by. The key is to pack smart.
